Why should you learn English? I DO believe that you need a good motivation to learn English. Without motivation, learning English will be very painful. Below are 22 reasons you should think of when you decide to learn English.

• The Internet is mostly written in English – Whenever you want to find information about a particularly topic, you need English. Most of the web-pages on the Internet are written in English. In 2005, before I moved to Vietnam, I looked on the Internet for information about Vietnam. The amount of information written in my mother tongue about Vietnam is very limited. Everything is written in English. English, thumb up!
• Great books are written in English – English is an international language and if a book is written in a language other than English then, sooner or later it will be translated into English. I have bought excellent books (bought them online), books that I couldn’t find written in my mother tongue. English, thumb up!
• Every country has its own newspapers/magazines written in English – Wherever you are in the world, there are newspapers and magazines written in English. English, thumb up!
• Language of science is English – Are you interested in science? Guess what? All of the good science related articles are written in English. English, thumb up!
• Watch TV in English – I am a Romanian in Vietnam. You might think that I can’t watch TV because I don’t know Vietnamese. You are right, I don’t, but I can watch TV because there are news reports in English. More than that there is Discovery Channel (or National Geographic, or many others), at least three movie channels, and many other international TV channels; all of them in English language. • You need English to study abroad – Do you want to study abroad? Well, all international programs offered by universities around the world require English. You want to study at a good university abroad then you must know English. English, thumb up!
• Wherever you are in the world, you can find people who can speak English – Although I am not an English native speaker and I don’t live in an English speaking country, I use only English for communicating with people. English, thumb up!
• English is the language of all international organizations – That means something! English, thumb up!
• Traveling in a foreign country will be a more enjoyable experience if you speak English – When you are in a foreign country you need to ask for directions, tourist attraction points, order food etc. English is the language you can use for all these needs. English, thumb up!
• Immigration is one of the main reasons why people learn English – The countries where most of the people choose to immigrate are English speaking countries. How can you work and integrate in that society if you don’t speak English? More than that, speaking English is a requirement. English, thumb up!
• A personal case, I am married with a wonderful Vietnamese woman because I could speak English – Without English, my life will be completely different right now. English, thumb up!
• Every CV has a “Languages” section – How will be your CV without English language in that section? Definitely, not very good. English, thumb up!
• You might want to extend your business worldwide – Well, pretty hard to do that if you don’t know English. If you know English then you will be able to contact business people around the world and present your products/services to the world. English, thumb up!
• Everybody has a computer now and most computer software is in English – Every computer uses an operating system that is fulfilled with words that we don’t know. So many times there is no translation into your mother language or if there is a translation, probably it doesn’t make any sense to you. I have tried long time ago to use Windows in Romanian language and honestly I couldn’t understand a word. Oh boy, it looked so strange! Definitely, English helps you to use your computer better. • Do you want to learn something new? If yes, then prepare to search for information in English – All good stuffs out there are in English. I have learned Web Design through English books. Very hard to find the same information in my mother tongue, especially because I don’t live in my native country. English, thumb up!
• Do you like to watch movies? There is no secret that American movies are the best and they are in English – Unfortunately, they are in English. You might say that there are subtitles. Yes, it is true. But, it is also true that I can give you thousands of examples of bad translations. More than that many situations can’t be translated very accurately. • There is the same situation with music – Unfortunately, you can’t listen to music with subtitles. You can see the lyrics and translate them but it makes no sense to listen to music with the translation in front of your eyes. English – thumb up!
• I have been told that if you want a better job then you have to know English – At least in Vietnam this is the situation. If you can speak English then you can get a good job. English, thumb up!
• English helps you to understand your own language better – That’s because learners of English compare English with their own language (I always do that). English, thumb up!
• Learning English makes you smarter – Yes, it is true! Learning English or any other foreign language is an exercise for your mind.
