Yesterday I had an interesting discussion with a friend (also English teacher) about reading and listening skills. We don’t talk very often about teaching because it seems that we have quite different opinions. He might be right since I heard the same statements from other teachers as well.
Reading aloud a piece of text is not a very popular ESL/EFL activity. Many ESL teachers say that reading aloud is unrealistic because it is never done in real life, we never read aloud in real life. That might be true, but the situation is quite different when we are talking about learners of English.
A question is a linguistic expression used to make a request for information, information that is given in form of an answer.
It is well known that in Vietnam everybody prefers to study English with a foreigner who is Caucasian, not Asian. After so many years of teaching English in Vietnam I am still amazed of the discrimination in hiring English teachers based on their race. Humans have a very large and complex set of muscles that can produce and modify the air flow coming from lungs, transforming it in different sounds of speech. In order to understand how this air flow is transformed in sounds of speech it is necessary to understand what parts of the vocal tract influence the way we produce the sounds of speech.
Fricatives are consonants that when they are produced the air escapes through a small passage and makes a hissing sound. There are fricatives in all languages and they are considered continuant consonants. That means someone can make them continuously as long as there is air in the lungs (plosives are not continuant).
