ESL Lesson Plan | Work, Jobs, and Occupations

This is an ESL lesson plan on work, jobs, and occupations that can be adapted for all levels.

  • Aim of the lesson: Talking about work, jobs, and occupations.
  • Language Focus: Present simple to talk about general truths.
  • Vocabulary focus: Jobs and Occupations.
  • Competency: Describe an occupation.
  • Length of the lesson: 45 minutes.

Warm-up

Teacher asks questions to introduce to learners the topic of the lesson.

  • What is your parent’s job?
  • What do you want to be when you grow up? Why?

Vocabulary (Pre-teaching vocabulary)

For this particularly lesson, vocabulary can be taught using pictures.

Vocabulary words: doctor, taxi driver, teacher, policeman, engineer, accountant, chef, farmer, mechanic, singer, subject, foreign, demand, public school, kindergarten, language center.

Listening

Students listen twice then answer the questions.

Teachers work in schools. Usually, a teacher teaches only one subject. Nowadays, one of the most popular subjects is English and English teachers are highly respected in Vietnam. Vietnamese teachers of English and foreign teachers of English are both in high demand and they usually work for more than one school. They teach in the morning for public schools and kindergartens, and in the evening for language centers.

Speaking

Speaking Task 1

  • At what age do people usually begin to work in Vietnam?
  • Do people in Vietnam have to work on weekends?
  • What do you think is more important: making money or enjoying the job?
  • What is the most boring job from the vocabulary list of this lesson? Why?
  • What is the best job from the list?
  • Will English help you getting your dream job?

Speaking Task 2

  • Talk about your dream job.
  • Talk about your father’s/mother’s job.
  • Talk about one of the jobs from the vocabulary list.
